Contaminated Sludge Won’t
Move from Seattle to Tacoma

King County will not move PCB-contaminated sludge from a Superfund clean-up site on Seattle’s Duwamish waterway to Tacoma’s Commencement Bay, after all. The original plan was heavily denounced by environmental groups, elected officials in the City of Tacoma, some Seattle officials, & others (including RCAA).

Instead, the materials will find a permanent home at a land-fill in Klickitat County.

The Superfund clean-up is under the auspices of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. RCAA said, in comments to the EPA, "We have a general concern about the way contaminated soils are handled in this State, because such materials have a way of ending up in bad places, & especially in the construction area for the third runway. We are concerned every time we see another precedent for mis-handling of contaminated materials. We do not want to see any more toxic materials from the Duwamish sent to Sea-Tac Airport, nor do we want to see them sent any other inappropriate place. We certainly don’t want PCBs from the EPA."

We congratulate B.J. Cummings, co-ordinator of Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition (DRCC), & her colleagues, for their successful campaign against this ill-advised notion.
