Boeing Field Noise Study Recommendations Get OK from County Council

King County Council has given its approval to the final report from the recent Part 150 study for King County International Airport (Boeing Field). The recommendations now go to the FAA for its review and approval––a lengthy process.

The study group unanimously recommended several actions intended to reduce noise impacts from the in-city airport, some of which will require favorable FAA action, and some of which the Airport can accomplish on its own.

Independent actions include:

  • Construction of a hush-house to muffle the sound of engine run-ups during maintenance and testing of engines
  • A voluntary “Fly Quiet” program, to encourage pilots to take responsibility for how and where they operate

    Actions needing FAA approval include:

  • Implementation of an instrument-approach procedure to bring planes in over Elliott Bay, to minimize overflights of residential area (especially Magnolia)
  • A Part 161 study of changes in flight procedures
  • Noise-insulation programs for schools & homes close to the Airport
