FACTS ABOUT HIGHLINE SCHOOL DISTRICT
Highline District Website
Location
Highline School District (District 401) is located in south-west King
County, Washington. It includes the cities of Burien, Des Moines, Normandy
Park, and SeaTac, as well as portions of unincorporated King County adjacent
to those four cities. The District was organized before World War I;
its oldest school still in use was built in 1904.
The majority of the current facilities were built in the 1950's and 1960's.
Pupil population
According to the District's count, pupil enrollment as of 1 may 1996 was
18,184; this makes Highline the 10th largest school district in the State,
in terms of number of pupils, just ahead of Evergreen District 112 (in
Clark County) and Puyallup. (By way of comparison, Federal Way has about
20,700 pupils, Everett has 17,400 pupils, Bellevue, 15,000, Auburn, 12,
400, Renton, 12,300, and Shoreline, 10,300. These numbers are from the
Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, as of 1 October 1996.)
Learning facilities
The District now operates 33 learning facilities, with a 34th temporarily
not in use but slated for probable use in Fall 1997. Most buildings were
built in the era of piston-engine planes, and before completion of the
second runway in 1974.

School Reconstruction
The Highline District is entirely
within the 65dnl for Sea-Tac Airport. After years of negotiations,
the District reached an agreement in 2002 with the Port of Seattle
which operates the Airport to noise insulate and rebuild district schools
using a combination of money from King County, a local bond issue,
and the FAA.
