Truth in Aviation: Newsletter of the Regional Commission on Airport Affairs

New, Improved On-Line Library
RCAA's on-library has undergone a major reorganization, making it a far more useful tool for all users, whether casual visitors, active no-runway campaigners, local officials, or visitors in other airport communities.

Originally, documents were posted in response to an immediate need, with little or no description of what they were or why they had been posted. Everything was piled up in one enormous webpage, clumsy to use & lacking some key sections, & without a clear program for including a full range of important materials.

Many of the documents were first posted, hastily, in HTML format. As part of the re-organization, our webmaster has re-posted many of these older records in PDF format, with improved legibility. Links to other websites have been checked & upgraded.

Now, people visiting the site with little or no background in Sea-Tac issues will find a more comprehensive & better-balanced presentation of the different issues involved in the no-runway struggle.

From the home page, visitors will link to the library portal page, which serves as a sort of mini-home-page for the entire on-line library. A “toolbar” on the left side of the portal page provides access to the various topical sections & subsections. This toolbar works in much the same way as the file-explorer function on a PC. In most cases, each section has an introduction that provides a brief summary of the particular issues covered in that section, before the list of documents relating that issue.

Also new to the on-line library is a shelf list for all publications in the RCAA's print library for the period 1990 – 2003. Shelf-lists for earlier materials, going back to 1965, are in preparation.

In the weeks ahead, we will develop additional sections, which will be posted as they are completed, & we will be posting key historical documents from the print library. We will of course continue to post the newest materials as received. If users have ideas for documents to post in the on-line library, or topics to cover, please let us know. mailto:librarian@rcaanews.org .

From the library portal page, visitors can download the most current Adobe Reader (necessary for dealing with PDF files) & the most recent “Flash” software (which enables the “toolbar” & other features). There is also a text-only version of the library for those with old software or using internet readers.

For technical reasons, it was not practical to install an on-site search engine for the old library page, but thanks to the restructuring, we will add this feature, which will make topical research much easier.
