EIS for Updated Boeing Field Master Plan Issued;
Public Hearing Planned for April 5 at Airport

King County International Airport (Boeing Field) announced on February 23 that a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the airport's update of its master plan has been issued, & that airport staff will hold a public hearing on the DEIS starting at 4:30 pm on Monday, April 5, at Room 110 of the Terminal (7277 Perimeter Rd. So., Seattle).

The period for filing comments on the EIS will end on Friday, April 9.

According to the preface to the EIS, the actual plan has not yet been prepared, & will not be prepared till after receipt & review of comments on the EIS. According to the section "Airport Development Plan", the Airport plans no radical changes from existing activities, in a "balanced growth" mode. This is a significant change from the draft plan of several years, which contemplated major growth in freight operations 9nearly a doubling). The planners assume that the Boeing Company will continue to use the largest part of the airport-related land on the west side.

Unchanged from earlier proposals is the idea of retaining a 10,000-foot principal runway, with legal runway safety areas, which would require another 880 feet of runway at the northern end. However, the EIS proposes that only aircraft requiring the full 10,000 feet will depart from the extreme northern end. This is likely to be the topic most vigorously discussed by representatives of the community and by the Georgetown Powerplant Museum.
